Laura Buckner

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, graduated high school in Scottsdale, Arizona…Who would have thought my next move would have been Birmingham, Alabama. For those of you that get the question, why Alabama? I understand. I graduated from Birmingham-Southern in 2009 and began working a year later in 2010, as an admission counselor. I am a recent graduate of BSC and I am so thankful and excited to be back on the Hilltop! When I’m not working, you will probably find me reading, cooking, watching my favorite TV shows and trying to squeeze in some healthy activities. I am in the process of reading the Harry Potter series and planning a trip to the Wizarding Word of Harry Potter. We shall see if it beats the month long art history trip to Italy I took while a student at Birmingham-Southern. I live in Homewood where I am surrounded by many BSC alums to keep my company after work and on the weekends. I couldn’t have had a better college experience and I look forward to embarking on the admission journey with excited seniors and their families. Birmingham-Southern is truly an awesome place.

I’ve been here since 1998; today I serve as Associate Director of Admission. I work with high school students in northeast Alabama, including all of the schools in the Gadsden area. In Birmingham, I work with students from Ensley, Erwin, Hoover, Huffman, Parker, Ramsay, Spain Park, West End, and Woodlawn high schools. I love BSC because of the sense of "community" that fills the campus—it's everywhere. Students, faculty, and staff all seem to mesh together like one, happy family.

I graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 2003 with a B.A. in Musical Theatre. After graduation, I lived in New York City, and toured professionally with Broadway Asia in The Sound of Music. I have been fortunate enough to be associated with Birmingham-Southern from the time I was a college student until today, and that’s a long time! I graduated from BSC in 1985 and immediately went to work here recruiting students. Today, as Dean for Enrollment Management, I am blessed to work so closely with all the college’s admission and financial aid professionals. I also was known to play some tennis back in the day, and also still sing a little! We hope you will visit us soon and see our beautiful campus and experience our wonderful people, and our new Admission Welcome Center. I graduated from BSC in 1986, and while in school I was a Resident Advisor and a House Director. I joined the Admission Office after graduation and stayed until 1998 before leaving the college for a number of years. I returned in 2007, and I currently serve as Assistant Director of Admission and work with United Methodist students regarding church-related scholarships. I assist prospective students from Bessemer Academy, Bethel Christian Academy, and Clay-Chalkville, Harvest Christian, Hewitt-Trussville, Hueytown, McAdory, Minor, Minor Christian, Oak Grove, Pleasant Grove, and Tarrant high schools. I joined the Birmingham-Southern community in 2010! I have several years of admissions experience and currently serve as the Regional Recruiter for the state of Georgia. Living full time in Atlanta, I look forward to helping prospective students and families learn more the ‘Southern experience. I am truly amazed at all of the unique educational opportunities that exist on BSC’s campus, and I can’t wait to share my enthusiasm for life on the Hilltop! In my spare time, I play lots of tennis and volunteer with several organizations throughout the Atlanta metro area. I also love to spend quality time with my husband, family, and friends and enjoy cooking, art, and watching old movies. I am happy to answer all of your questions about BSC and the admissions process.
