Location

192 wooded acres, three miles west of downtown Birmingham, served by eight major airlines, Amtrak and Interstate highways 20, 59, and 65.

Campus

Some 50 academic, residential, administrative, and athletics buildings/facilities, including a new Admission Welcome Center, Athletics Complex, Urban Environmental Park, apartments for student living, and under-construction suite-style residence halls for men and women.

Campus technology

More than 1,000 college-owned, Windows-based, and Apple systems with more than 100 network laser printers in public, departmental lab, and classroom settings. All student areas of the BSC campus are WiFi accessible.

Diversity

Birmingham-Southern has approximately a 20 percent multicultural and international population. There are five multicultural groups on campus, including The Black Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Multi-cultural Awareness Organization, and the One A-Chord Gospel Choir.

Residence halls

Six residence halls on the residence hall quad, six fraternity houses on Fraternity Row, six sorority townhouses behind the Bruno Residence Hall, and the Hilltop Village Apartments.

Faculty

Birmingham-Southern has a 12:1 student to faculty ratio, and of the full-time members of the faculty, more than 96 percent hold either a doctoral degree or the highest degree in their field.

Enrollment

1,508 students from 33 states and 11 foreign countries. The first-year class consistently has the highest academic profile in the state.

Academics

Five bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 programs of study, interdisciplinary and specially individualized majors and minors, academic calendar of two semesters, and a January Interim Term.

Advising/counseling

Faculty advisors, academic and personal counseling, career counseling, and pre-professional guidance in church-related vocations, law, economics and business administration, and health-related careers.

Innovative curriculum

Foundations general education plan expands the college’s liberal arts mission to address the talents and skills needed to be successful in an increasingly complex and technological society.

National honor societies

Sheltering institution for Phi Beta Kappa; home to 20 other honorary or professional societies in various academic areas.

Intercollegiate athletics

21 NCAA Division III varsity sports for men and women, including football, track and field, and lacrosse. Men's and women's lacrosse began play in spring 2009.

Special programs

Honors Program, Interim Term, Leadership Studies, Service-Learning, Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum, study abroad, internships, and undergraduate research opportunities.

Consortia

The college holds membership in the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS), Birmingham Area Consortium of Higher Education (BACHE), National Council on Undergraduate Research, Project Kaleidoscope, The Annapolis Group, Council of Independent Colleges, and National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, among others.

Religious life

Several weekly offerings from diverse Christian traditions held in Yeilding Chapel. Religious, academic, and social life at the college provides various additional opportunities for worship, study, service, and intentional growth in faith and understanding. As a Methodist-related college, we are committed to conviction in one’s own faith tradition and tolerance of all others.

Financial aid

More than $27 million in federal, state, and institutional programs, including scholarships, loans, grants, and work-study; more than 98 percent of students receive some form of financial aid.

Student activities

Newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, and scholarly review; dance and theatre productions, full range of musical and instrumental groups, including a new marching band in fall 2010; numerous special interest, service, and honorary organizations; and a full range of men’s and women’s intramural sports.
