Veterans Educational Benefits

Birmingham-Southern College is approved by the State Approving Agency to certify students who are eligible for Veterans Educational Benefits. For further information on this program or to see if you qualify, please contact the Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-827-1000. The campus representative is the Financial Aid Office.

The steps to apply for benefits:

Use http://www.va.gov/ to determine the benefits for which you may be eligible. Identify your eligibility; then use the VA form finder to find the correct form.

Send this to the VA regional office with jurisdiction over the State:

They will provide you with an educational benefit eligibility letter which you will turn in to the BSC Records office (it would be a good idea to give the Financial Aid Office a copy) – this form tells us how much of a benefit you will receive from the VA. Click here for an example benefit letter.

BSC will send in a VA Form 22-1999, Enrollment Certification to give the start and stop dates of the benefits.

- Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding.
  Therefore, you may be eligible if:
  - You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
  - You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
  - You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
