Distinguished Scholars Awards

The Distinguished Scholars Awards represent the highest scholarships earned by entering freshmen at Birmingham-Southern College. These competitive scholarships valued up to full-tuition are based on outstanding scholastic achievement in and out of the class as well as participation in the invitation-only scholarship competition held on February 20, 2010. Students must submit an application for admission no later than January 1. Students are encouraged to submit applications by December 1 if possible. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement as indicated by high school transcripts, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and the interview and essay completed during the Scholarship Day event.

Guaranteed Presidential Scholarship

Unlimited number of $16,000 renewable scholarships awarded to new freshmen. Plus guaranteed invitation to scholarship competiton with an opportunity to increase award up to full-tuition.

Guaranteed Presidential Scholarship requirements:

Application for admission by January 1
Rank in top 10% of graduating class and/or 3.67 core GPA
ACT score of 31-36
or
SAT score of 1360-1600 (Critical Reading & Math)

Full-Tuition Distinguished Scholars Awards:

National Merit Finalists/National Achievement Scholars/National Hispanic Scholars - A limited number of full tuition scholarships per year are available to finalists in the National Merit or National Achievement Competitions. Those finalists must list Birmingham-Southern as their first college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

William James & Elizabeth Perry Rushton Scholarship - One renewable scholarship valued at full-tuition, plus room, board, and all required fees and a $2,000 travel stipend awarded to a new freshman.

Thomas E. Jernigan Scholarship - Renewable awards carrying a value of 90% of direct costs (tuition, fees, room, and board). Students must earn the other 10% of costs through work from June 1 to May 31 each year.

Neal & Anne Berte Scholarship - One renewable scholarship valued at full-tuition awarded to new freshmen.

Blount-Monaghan/Vulcan Materials Company Scholarship - One renewable scholarship valued at full-tuition awarded to new freshmen.

Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship - One renewable scholarship valued at full-tuition awarded to new freshmen. Consideration is limited to students who score 33 or higher on ACT or SAT equivalent (Critical Reading + Math). Scholarship is awarded based on application essay/personal statement.

Henry C. Goodrich Scholarship - Renewable full tuition award for entering freshmen who plan to pursue a career in business and other related fields.

Elizabeth Rose Hayes Scholarships - One renewable scholarship valued at full-tuition for entering freshmen who plan to pursue a career in a health-related field.

Arthur M. Freeman Health Careers Scholarships - Renewable awards of varying amounts for entering freshmen who plan to pursue a career in a health-related field. Demonstrated need may also be considered.
