Nursing

Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work … - Florence Nightingale

Are you driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals old and young who are battling everything from a mild fever to a life-threatening disease? If so, Birmingham-Southern’s 3-2 nursing program may be just the right fit for you.

The special relationship that often develops between nurses and patients is so important in the health care industry. The purpose of the pre-nursing curriculum at BSC is to prepare you for admission into Vanderbilt University’s graduate-level advanced practice nursing program. You will receive a bachelor’s degree from BSC (in biology for instance) and a master’s degree from Vanderbilt in nursing.

Many students at BSC intend to pursue careers in health professions like nursing or various others: dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, public health, or occupational/physical therapy. Pre-nursing students should note that the nursing program is not a major offered by Birmingham-Southern, but coursework that can be applied to the Vanderbilt School of Nursing.

Some of the benefits of spending the first two or three years of a nursing program at a liberal arts college include:

  • A variety of math and science courses which are useful for the mental calculations required in clinical training,
  • A better understanding of the world from a broad perspective that will help you to collaborate better with patients and medical and administrative staff, and
  • BSC’s emphasis on service learning that provides experiences which are excellent for a career in nursing.

The college’s Health Professions Advisory Committee consists of math and science, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences faculty. HPAC provides a composite evaluation for students who are applying to graduate/professional schools in health care.

If you are interested in learning more about any of our majors and minors, you will find more information in the Disciplinary Majors and Minors section of the BSC Course Catalog.
