That’s the beauty of a liberal arts education, of course. You’ll learn how to think critically; you’ll learn how to solve problems, not memorize answers. You’ll learn how to communicate your ideas clearly.

Academic Program

In our 4-1-4 academic calendar, you will enroll in four classes in the fall semester, one during the January Interim Term, and four in the spring. We currently offer five bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 programs of study, as well as interdisciplinary and specially individualized majors and dual degree programs. We even offer you the opportunity to design your own major.

Foundations Curriculum

Our unique Foundations curriculum expands the liberal arts mission to address the talents and skills you’ll need to be successful in an increasingly complex and technological society. Among the curriculum’s key elements are required First-Year Foundations courses that build intellectual and academic community among first-year students.

Faculty

It’s a cliché to say that our faculty is the core strength to the college, but like all clichés, it's built on the truth. More than 96 percent of our faculty members hold either a doctorate or the highest degree in their field. The 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio here allows your professors to know and understand your strengths and your weaknesses; they’ll pull out the very best you have to give. And when you graduate, you’ll be amazed how many of your professors have become your friends.

Other Special Programs

Your education at Birmingham-Southern won’t be confined to the classroom. It’s a simple fact that you learn more by doing than by studying, so we give you ample opportunity to put what you learn into action through our expanding Study Abroad program or the January Interim Term where you concentrate on one area of interest from Birmingham to Zimbabwe to Italy. You’ll have the chance to participate in service-learning projects in the local community as well as across the country and overseas, and in a Leadership Studies program that pushes you to be a positive force for making the world a better place. You’ll also have access to internships and mentorships, undergraduate research, and Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum.

Donald C. Harrison Honors Program

With its long history of academic excellence, Birmingham-Southern is truly an Honors College. Within that Honors College is an Honors Program that challenges and rewards your excellence even more. In the Honors Program, you’ll have opportunities such as specially designed courses just for Harrison Scholars, preferred registration, special lectures, research and travel stipends, first-year honors housing, and many other benefits.

Academic Resource Center

While our academic program is rigorous, we provide a number of tools to help you succeed. The Academic Resource Center provides speech and writing centers and foreign language and math labs, among other resources. Most importantly, you’ll find people ready to help you do more than get by—they’ll be there to help you thrive.
