In the English Department, we have two goals: to teach you to form and articulate your thoughts clearly and effectively (in both spoken and written language), and to help you understand the great works of American, British, and world literature.

Our students come to study English for a number of different reasons. We’ll help you design a course of English study that meets your goals, while maintaining the depth and breadth of study traditionally expected in the discipline. You could choose to focus on subjects such as gender studies, ethnic literature, literature in various interdisciplinary contexts, literary history, literary theory, or the teaching of English. The beauty of a degree in English is that it prepares you well for diverse careers in fields such as law, government, journalism, publishing, or teaching.
