Biology

There is no better high than discovery

The Biology Department prepares you for a variety of careers including health care and research. We’re big believers in collaboration, which means as a biology student, you won’t just study science—you will DO science. You will learn the art of science in our classrooms, laboratories, field trips, pre-professional internships, and study abroad experiences. You’ll take part in hands-on learning that will hone the problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are the foundation of a successful career.

Small classes and labs allow your professors to work with you in small groups and one-on-one settings. All of this is housed in our $24.1 million state-of-the-art Elton B. Stephens Science Center, a facility that enables us to offer the best possible training.

The Pre-health Program will allow you to learn about the health professions, meet with administrators from medical, dental and other professional schools, and work alongside practitioners through our pre-health internship program. Our Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) will help you prepare from day one for professional school and assist you in the application process to ensure you submit the strongest applications possible to the professional schools of your choice.

“My professors at the UAB med school refer to Birmingham-Southern as the Med School Bus. There’s no doubt BSC prepares you do well here.” -Dr. Lauren Nassetta

The Biology Research Program offers students many opportunities to work alongside our faculty in the investigation of exciting and relevant scientific problems. These experiences include the Summer Research Associate Program (SRAP), independent study, and two semesters of senior research that culminate in the Senior Capstone Research Experience. These valuable experiences allow our pre-health and pre-research students to be very strong applicants to professional and graduate schools.

[Pictured above] A group of seven students enrolled in the Biology 410 and 472 courses at Birmingham-Southern are spending a part of their summer researching the scientific side of Costa Rica. Some of the students are helping Dr. Megan Gibbons, BSC associate professor of biology, and Dr. Peter Van Zandt, BSC visiting assistant professor of biology, conduct tropical ecology research, while seniors are conducting their capstone research projects (required for Biology 472) at La Selva Biological Research Station.
