If you feel that pull, that irresistible tug on your heart to create, to speak through art—then Birmingham-Southern may be the place for you. Here, you can explore your talents in an environment that encourages boldness and imagination. No single style dominates the curriculum or the work of our faculty and students. You’ll be challenged to test your own limits as we facilitate your imaginative depths.

You’ll be given fundamental instruction in design, drawing, and theory in the freshman year. They may then pursue a concentration in one of the following disciplines: drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture.

Art history majors follow a similar track with an introduction to the studio process, but with an involved concentration in art history. You also have the option to pursue a minor in either art studio or art history.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) emphasizes extensive professional preparation in studio art. The BFA degree provides the foundation necessary if you intend to pursue studio art production and art-related fields of employment. The BFA is also the degree you’ll seek if you’re interested in pursuing graduate school and an MFA in studio art.

The Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in studio art involves a strong concentration in studio art and art history, but allows you a broader spread of course work in disciplines outside the field of art. If you are interested in teaching art in the elementary or secondary school level, you may want to pursue the BA in studio art paired with the degree programs in education.

The BA in art history is an intensive study of art’s long history. This degree gives you a foundation to dream about being a curator or conservator in a museum or gallery. It’s also the right direction if you know you are interested in post-graduate work leading up to a Ph.D. in art history.
